E-cigarette batteries have been a hot topic over the course of the last couple years. There have been all kinds of reports about batteries sparking, catching on fire, or exploding, and it’s caused a lot of people to panic with regards to e-cigarette safety.
The truth is that most e-cigarette battery problems can be avoided. There are steps e-cigarette users can take to cut down on the chances of an e-cigarette battery catching on fire or exploding, and as long as they take those steps, they shouldn’t run into any major issues. It’s really all a matter of just being diligent when it comes to taking safety precautions.
Some of the steps are pretty obvious. For example, by only buying e-cigarettes and e-cigarette batteries from reputable companies, you can eliminate a lot of the risk associated with using them. By inspecting your e-cigarette batteries and replacing them at the first sign of trouble, you can also avoid putting yourself into a dangerous situation.
But there is one issue that might not seem super obvious that you need to be aware of before you start using an e-cigarette on a regular basis. There are some e-cigarette batteries that come wrapped with a special wrapping that needs to stay intact. The wraps for these batteries are very inexpensive—they usually only cost 10 cents or so—but there are some new vapers who don’t realize how dangerous it can be to use a battery with a damaged wrap. The slightest tear in a wrap could prove to be catastrophic.
If you are currently using a vaping device that includes a battery that is wrapped, you need to be careful when using it. Let’s take a look at why it’s so important to inspect wrapped batteries and repair or replace them if the wrapping is ever damaged…

Why Are Some Batteries Wrapped?
The wraps that are placed on many e-cigarette batteries are there for a pretty simple reason. If at any point the positive pin on a battery and the edge of the battery both touch a piece of a metal at the same time, it can cause a spark. That spark can then lead to a fire starting, and it could also cause an explosion to take place.
So while the wrapping on a battery might seem kind of inconsequential when you look at it, it actually plays a really big role. It’s the last line of defense in a lot of ways and is there to stop your battery from coming into contact with metal. This is why you are going to want to inspect your e-cigarette batteries from time to time to make sure the wraps are still covering them.
What Kind of Damage Can Wrapped Batteries Sustain?
Over time, the wraps that are placed on e-cigarette batteries can suffer from all kinds of damage. In some cases, handling the batteries improperly can cause scratches and other indentations in the wraps, which will force you to replace them.
But more often than not, the wraps on batteries will simply break down over time and start to crack and peel away from the battery at the top and bottom. There’s really nothing that you can do to prevent this from happening, and for the most part, it just comes with the territory.
But if you attempt to use a battery with a cracked wrap on it, you could find yourself in really big trouble at some point in the near future. When wraps crack near the edges of a battery, it could lead to the aforementioned sparking. So it’s really important for you to take a look at your e-cigarette batteries every week or so to see if any cracking is taking place. If so, it’s always better to be safe than sorry and replace the wraps on the batteries immediately.
How Are Wrapped Batteries With Damage Repaired?
There are a few ways to take care of e-cigarette battery wraps that have been damaged. One is to simply replace the entire battery. You can get a new battery with a new wrap at any vape shop and start vaping again right away. The only problem with this option is that it can be more expensive than other options.
If you want to avoid buying a new battery, there are also other steps you can take. One is bringing your e-cigarette battery to a nearby vape shop and having them repair the cracked wrap. If you haven’t done a repair on your own in the past, this might be your best option since you don’t want to start experimenting with batteries. It could lead to trouble.
The other step you can take if you are experienced with e-cigarette batteries is replacing the wrap on your own. You can purchase a large pack of battery wraps for just a dollar or two, and by using a blow dryer and one of the wraps, you can re-wrap a battery in a matter of just minutes. It’s a pretty easy process, as you can see in this video:
Just make sure you know exactly what you’re doing before you even think about replacing a wrap. Batteries can be dangerous if they aren’t handled properly.
Is It Ever Safe to Use a Battery With a Damaged Wrap?
Some vapers like to push the limits and use a battery even if it has a damaged wrap, since damaged wraps won’t always lead to sparking or fire. You shouldn’t ever take this approach.
While getting a battery re-wrapped isn’t necessarily fun, it’s in your best interest to do it. Batteries with cracked or damaged wraps are not safe to use, and you could put yourself or others in danger if you attempt to use one anyway.
If you have any question about whether or not a battery is safe, it’s always better to err on the side of caution. By replacing a wrap or replacing an entire battery, you can eliminate just about all of the risk associated with using an e-cigarette and get back to enjoying your vaping experience.
