How To Switch E-Juice Flavors Without the Bad Taste

So you just bought a new e-juice that looks great, and you fill up your e-cigarette’s whole tank in anticipation of a great vape. But you take your first puff, and it tastes awful. But, you think, maybe it was just a dry hit. So you try again.

On the the third puff, you finally realize you’ve made a huge mistake. The e-juice isn’t what you expected, and there’s no way you’re going to make yourself vape the whole tank. So what do you do?

Many new vapers come across this problem early on and aren’t quite sure how to handle changing out different e-juices. When you vape a tank until it’s empty, refilling it is a relatively straightforward task. But sometimes you want to change out e-liquids when your tank still has juice left.

switch e-juice flavors

Sometimes, like in the scenario above, this happens when you try a new juice and find that you hate the flavor. Or maybe you just like to switch it up often, and find yourself craving a new flavor when you’re only half-way through your tank.

Either way, switching out e-liquids in your e-cigarette’s tank is simple to do. It’s a bit more of a hassle than waiting until it’s empty, but you certainly don’t have to finish up vaping the whole tank before changing flavors, as new vapers sometimes think.

There are also some things you can do to make switching out new flavors easier, like using an e-cigarette with a dripping atomizer or using multiple tanks.

In this post we will teach you everything you need to know about changing out e-liquids. We’ll walk you through the basics of switching out juices when there’s still juice left in your tank and give you tips for making the task as easy and painless as possible.

Multiple Tanks: A Must for an E-juice Aficionado

If you’re the kind of vaper that loves to try out new flavors and is always looking for the best new e-juice on the market, then you should seriously consider buying an extra tank or two for your e-cigarette. That way you can keep a few flavors going at the same time, and simply pop in a new tank whenever you want to juices.

This works especially well if you have two or three main e-juice flavors that you like to alternate often, and can save you a lot of time and wasted liquid.

Only Fill Up Your Tank As Much As Necessary

If you find switching out flavors often and having to waste e-juice in the process, you might be filling your tank up too full. Most tanks have a fill line, but that’s just the maximum amount you can pour in, you don’t have to fill it up all the way.

If you like to switch flavors often, consider just filling your tank up a little bit, and adding more later if you need to. Just make sure there’s enough juice at the bottom to reach your coils and/or wicks.

How to Switch Out E-liquids Before Your Tank is Empty

If you find yourself needing to switch to a different e-juice before you’ve finished the last batch in your tank, you want to make sure you remove all traces of the old e-liquid from your e-cigarette. First, you need to clean the tank. Then, you need to get all the old e-juice out of your coils and/or wicks.

Here is a diagram of a basic clearomizer set-up to help you.

Rinse the Tank

First, unscrew the tank from your e-cigarette’s battery and pour the old e-juice out. Make sure you unscrew the tank from the atomizer or coil head, too.

Now, to remove any sticky residue or e-juice left clinging to the sides, give your tank a couple thorough rinses with warm water. Depending on the material and design of your tank, you can try washing it with a small amount of diluted soap, too. (Make sure to consult your user manual first, though, or you could damage your tank.)

After your tank is clean, pat it dry with a soft cloth or paper towel. You don’t want to leave any water droplets on the inside, or it will dilute your juice when you refill it.

Rinse the Coils

Rinsing out your tank is the easy part, but now you have to get the old e-juice out of your coils and wicks. This can be a pain, and, in most cases, it’s considered best practice to just replace the coils and cotton/wicking material altogether.

If you decide to give them a rinse, don’t use anything except warm water and make sure you give them time to thoroughly and completely dry out before you use them again.

Another option for getting the old e-juice flavor out of your coils and wicks is to flush them out with a small amount of unflavored e-liquid. Some e-juice sellers offer flavorless e-juice or pure propylene glycol, which you can use to rinse your wicks and coils in-between flavors to reduce the chance of them mixing.

Now you’re ready to refill your tank with a new flavor!

Dripping: Avoid the Tank Hassle Altogether

As you can tell from this guide, switching out e-liquid flavors is relatively straightforward. But thoroughly rinsing and drying all the parts of the tank and atomizer can take some time and be a real hassle.

If you have to do it often, it can quickly become a dreaded chore.

But what if I told you there was a way to change out e-liquids as often as you like without ever having to rinse and dry a tank? That’s what a type of e-cigarette called a “dripper” is perfect for.

An e-cigarette atomizer designed for dripping (often referred to as an RDA) has only the small well in the atomizer to hold e-juice, and doesn’t use a tank at all. Instead, you drip e-juice directly onto the coils and wicking material. The lack of a tank means that it won’t hold much liquid at a time, and you have to drip more liquid onto the atomizer much more often.

This can be a hassle and it can make a mess if you’re not careful, but vapers who drip often enjoy the hands-on experience. Many also say that dripping is the best possible way to get the best flavor from your e-juice.

Since you have to drip new e-juice onto the coils every 5-10 puffs you take, it’s incredibly simple to change out flavors whenever you like without any rinsing or hassle. Simply drip the new flavor onto the coil and wicks as soon as the last flavor dries up. You might get a bit of a mixed flavor at first, but it should only last a couple puffs.

Many vapers recommend dripping to e-cigarette users who find themselves switching back and forth between flavors often. It’s usually cheaper than having to buy several backup tanks, but it does come with it’s own drawbacks and is usually only recommended for experienced vapers.

Flavor Makes the Vaping Experience

Whether you go with a tank-based vape or a dripper, you should now know everything you need to switch out flavors with ease.

All the different aspects of vaping and handling e-liquids can be overwhelming at first, and it’s up to fellow vapers to help one another out. If you know any other beginner vapers who might struggle with this issue, make sure you pass on the knowledge or send them a link to this article.

For many people, trying out different flavors and experiencing all the different, delicious e-juices that the market has to offer is a big part of the appeal of vaping. Knowing how to switch out flavors is important, and could mean the difference between falling in love with vaping and trashing your e-cigarette when you can’t get the flavor right.

Thanks for the article! It is great for both beginners and intermediate vapers. Changing juices is a necessity and this makes it a bit easier to do that.

I totally took everything apart, and cleaned everything, put a new coil, new juice, and cleaned out tank. Still tastes like old juice. I really need to know what to do, honestly tastes like smoked rubber bands
