The Ultimate E-Cigarette Beginners Guide!

So you’re thinking about making the switch to electronic cigarettes? Most smokers have already tried the “cigalike” electronic cigarettes that are sold in gas stations and convenience stores across the country, but everyone knows that those just aren’t effective at helping actually kick the smoking habit.

So you have seen people walking around with a variety of different devices, some large, some small, but you still have no idea what would be the best for you? That is where we come in. Here at Aspen Valley Vapes we are going to help you easily make the switch to vaping! We have created complete starter kits that come with everything you need to start vaping right away.

Electronic Cigarette Battery:

The “battery” will be the base of your electronic cigarette setup. Your battery will heat up the firing pin, which will connect to whatever “tank” that you decide to use. You can find batteries in all sorts of shapes and sizes. The Vision Spinner, for example, is a circular tube, similar to a cigarette, but a bit thicker and longer. You can also find “box” batteries such as the Innokin iTaste MVP 3.0 or the Smok XPRO M45. Both styles work great, it just comes down to personal preference and your desired battery life. Of our complete starter kits, the MVP 3.0 has the largest internal battery.

Electronic Cigarette Tank:

Aspire Nautilus Unboxed
Aspire Nautilus (5ml Tank)

Your tank is what screws onto/into your battery. There are a large number of tanks to choose from, but in the long run, they all serve the same purpose. Your tank (clearomizer) will hold your eliquid (also known as e-juice) and it also houses your coil (atomizer). Your coil is saturated with e-juice and it will connect with the firing pin on your battery to produce vapor when you fire and inhale your electronic cigarette. You will find tanks that come in a variety of sizes and styles. When you are looking at purchasing a new tank, you will see in the specs how many mls of e-juice the tank will hold. One of the most popular tanks, the Aspire Nautilus, will hold up to 5ml of e-juice.

If you’re looking for extreme vapor production, you will want to get a sub ohm tank. Sub Ohm tanks use coils that are below 1.0ohm. Some of the most popular sub ohm tanks are the Aspire Atlantis, Joyetech Delta 2, and the Subtank Mini. If you do decide to purchase a sub ohm tank, you will want to make sure the battery you get can fire a sub ohm tank. We do offer complete starter kits that come with both a sub ohm tank and a battery that is compatible, such as the Smok Xpro M45 and Aspire Atlantis combo.

What Does Ohm Mean?

In short, ohm is the SI unit of electrical resistance. What does ohm mean for vapers?

Lower Ohm Coils Will:

  • Heat The Coil Faster
  • Produce More Vapor
  • Drain The Battery Faster
  • Use E-Juice Faster
  • Produce A Warmer Tasting Vape

Higher Ohm Coils Will:

  • Heat The Coil Slower, Which Will Produce “Less” Vapor
  • Provide A “Cooler” Tasting Vape
  • Use Less E-Juice
  • Prolong Battery Life

E-Juice – Everything You Need To Know:

Since you’re new to vaping, you might not know what type of e-juice to use or what mg of nicotine you should choose. In this section, we will cover the e-juice basics.

What Nicotine E-Juice Should I get?

A higher nicotine content will deliver more of a “throat hit” than lower nicotine levels.

18mg – We recommend the 18mg nicotine level for those who are pack-a-day smokers of full flavor cigarettes.

12mg – We recommend the 12mg nicotine level for those who smoke one pack of light cigarettes per day. If you are actively smoking about half a pack of cigarettes per day, we would still recommend 12mg nicotine rather than 6mg.

6mg – We recommend the 6mg nicotine content to those who are “social smokers”. If you are a casual smoker and enjoy the nicotine, we suggest starting at 6mg of nicotine.

0mg – Do you enjoy the taste of wonderful flavors or occasionally smoke hookah? We recommend 0mg of nicotine for those that are interested in enjoying the wonderful e-juice flavors that we offer.

Can I Lower My Nicotine Content In My E-Juice?

Of course! I personally started out at 18mg of nicotine and now vape on 6mg e-juice, with the occasional 12mg bottle of e-juice. Most people decrease their nicotine levels as they continue vaping, there is no harm in trying a lower nicotine level. There are tons of vapers who start at 18mg and then get all the way down to 0mg of nicotine. Some vapers that reach 0mg continue to vape, because they enjoy the flavor and the act of vaping, but some quit vaping completely, that option is up to you!

What Nicotine E-Juice Should I Use In A Sub Ohm Tank?

If you’re using a sub ohm tank, the majority of sub ohm vapers use 0, 3, or 6mg nicotine. The “throat hit” is a lot stronger on a sub ohm tank and the nicotine is delivered in a higher content. You can use a higher nicotine content than 6mg, but we do recommend 0, 3, or 6mg.If you’re a pack a day smoker, a 6mg e-juice in a sub ohm tank is comparable to around a 12mg e-juice in a standard clearomizer like the Aspire Nautilus Mini. Like previously stated, you can use a higher nicotine content in a sub ohm tank, but there will be a much more intense throat hit.

What PG/VG Ratio Should I Use?

If you’re going to purchase a complete starter kit with the Aspire Nautilus, Aspire Nautilus Mini, Or Mini Protank 3, we suggest using our house e-juice which are a 50pg/50vg blend. We recommend using a 50/50 blend in these tanks because the higher VG e-juices will gunk up your coils and drastically reduce the lifespan of your coils. If you want to purchase a starter kit with a subohm tank, you can choose between our house e-juice or any of our premium e-juice brands that have a higher VG content. Lucky Flynns, for example, is a 30pg/70vg blend. The higher VG content, the more vapor production you will get.

What Is PG (Propylene Glycol)?

PG is short for Propylene glycol, which is a colorless and odorless liquid. PG is one of the factors in how hard of a “throat hit” you will receive from your e-juice. If you use a higher PG e-juice, you will notice a more prominent throat hit, but much less vapor production.  Propylene Glycol can be found in many household foods and beverages, most recently noted to be included in Fireball Whiskey.

What Is VG (Vegetable Glycerin)?

VG is short for vegetable glycerin, which is another clear, colorless and odorless liquid. Vegetable Glycerin is produced from plant oils, usually palm, soy, or coconut oil. With e-juice, VG is responsible for vapor production, so the higher the VG, the more vapor production you will receive. We have found that 30pg/70vg is the perfect combo for sub ohm vapers as it has great vapor production as well as very good flavor.

Setting Up Your Electronic Cigarette & Electronic Cigarette Maintenance:

So you’ve decided to start using electronic cigarettes, now we cover how to setup your new ecig and how to maintain your electronic cigarette.

How To Fill Your Tank With E-Juice:

You’ve just received your first electronic cigarette and you’re not sure what to do. Well, the first step will be filling up your tank! This is a very easy process, so there is no need to worry!

Filling Your Clearomizer With E-Juice:

1) Unscrew The Base Of Your Clearomizer

2) Hold Your Clearomizer Upside Down

3) Take Your E-Juice And Slowly Start Pouring It Down The Side Of Your Clearomizer

4) Avoid The Middle Hole Of Your Clearomizer

5) Fill Only Till The Line, Don’t Overfill Your Clearomizer

6) Screw On The Base And Let Your Coil Absorb The E-Juice For 5-10 Minutes

7) Enjoy Your Vape!!The Video Below Shows You How To Fill Up The Aspire Nautilus Mini Clearomizer (not sure if you said it in the video… make sure that you recommend that they don’t let the tank go less than 1/4 full)

Setting Up Your First Electronic Cigarette:

Now that you have your clearomizer all filled, we are going to go over how to setup your electronic cigarette. For this example, we will be using the Eleaf iStick and the Aspire Nautilus Mini. This setup is the same for all of our e-cigarette starter kits.

Putting Your E-Cig Together:

1) Take Your Now Full Nautilus Mini And Screw The Base Into Your Eleaf iStick

2) Turn On Your iStick By Clicking The Fire Button Five Times

3) Set Your Wattage To Around 8 Watts By Pressing The + Button (You Can Change This To Find Your Personal Sweet Spot, But We Are Using 8 For This Example)

4) Now You’re Ready To Vape! Press The Fire Button And Inhale From The Mouthpiece Of Your Clearomizer! Enjoy!

Switching Your Coil:

No matter what clearomizer you decide to purchase, you will have to swap out your coils once they go bad. The lifespan of a coil varies by tank and by user, but with most setups you should expect to get around two weeks of vaping out of a coil before you need to switch. You will know when you need to switch your coil because the taste will become unpleasnt and you may notice a burt taste.

Replacing Your Clearomizer Coil:

1) Unscrew The Base Of Your Clearomizer

2) Unscrew Your Coil

3) Replace Your Old Coil With A New Coil

4) Screw The Base Back On To The Clearomizer

5) Wait About 10 Minutes For The Coil To Absorb E-Juice (Take A Few Drags Without Pressing The Fire Button To “Prime” The Coil”).

6) Enjoy Your Vape!!
